What is B-READY?

B-READY is the UNC-Healthwise BiRth DEcision AiD StudY. This pilot study is for women with one or two prior cesarean deliveries who are now pregnant and eligible for a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC). The purpose of the study is to learn about their decision-making process and how an online decision aid tool could help improve communication with their prenatal provider.

The study will be conducted in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (Control/usual care group): Women in this group will undergo usual care and complete survey questions on knowledge of and involvement in the decision for TOLAC or repeat cesarean.
  • Phase 2 (Experimental group): Women in this group will review a web-based decision aid prior to undergoing counseling by their prenatal care provider. Following completion of the decision aid and provider counseling, they will complete a series of survey questions to assess their perceptions of their knowledge of and involvement in the decision for repeat cesarean or TOLAC. The experimental group will be compared with the control group of women who did not receive the decision aid.

What does B-READY involve?

  • Researchers from UNC’s School of Medicine will recruit women from UNC OB/GYN, UNC MFM, UNC Midwifery, UNC Family Medicine, and Reply OB/GYN.
  • All women will answer screening questions to see if they are eligible.
  • If eligible, some women will only fill out an online survey.  Other women will view an online decision aid tool and then fill out an online survey.
  • All women who complete a survey will receive a gift card.
  • Some outcome data will be collected from women’s medical records.
  • Enrollment will continue through March of 2019.
