What is GooDMomS?

  • The Gestational Diabetes Management Study (GooDMomS) is a unique program that took place from 2013-2015 and focused on glucose (“blood sugar”) control and weight management during and after pregnancy.
  • Gestational diabetes, also known as GDM, is a type of diabetes that begins during pregnancy and can increase the chances of the mother and her infant developing adult diabetes later in life.
  • The purpose of GooDMomS was to help women with gestational diabetes to have a healthy pregnancy and to teach them about good health habits after delivery that can lower the risk of adult diabetes in themselves and their children.

What did GooDMomS involve?

  • Everyone received their usual medical care. Half of the participants received the web-based intervention and half were in the self-guided group where they received healthy information and tips through email.
  • The web-based intervention group was encouraged to log into the study website weekly to learn more about healthy behaviors and to enter their weight and blood sugars during pregnancy and postpartum.  The usual care (self-directed) group, received basic health information, as well as regular support from their providers.
  • All participants were asked to attend 4 study visits throughout the program.  The final study visit was 8 months after their delivery date.
